Interior Glossary
Air bag module: The air bag and inflator assembly together in a single package. This module is mounted in the center of the steering wheel.
Clock spring: A device, located between the steering column and steering wheel that conducts electrical signals in an air-bag system to the module, while allowing steering-wheel rotation. This provides electrical continuity in all steering-wheel positions.
Collapsible steering column: An energy-absorbing steering column that is designed to collapse if the driver is thrown into it due to a heavy collision.
Heater core: A small water-to-air radiator-like heat exchanger that provides heat for the passenger compartment.
Lumbar support: A seat support for the lumbar portion of the occupant's body.
Odometer: A mechanical or electronic counter in the speedometer that indicates trip or total miles accumulated on the vehicle.
Oil-pressure gauge: An instrument used to display the oil pressure of the engine lubrication system.
Onboard fire-extinguisher system: A fire-extinguishing system permanently installed in the driver's compartment of a vehicle; required by most race-sanctioning bodies.
Speedometer: An instrument, usually dash mounted, used to measure the speed of a vehicle.
Steering column: Tubing through which the steering shaft mounts and rotates, providing a surface for the mounting of the hazard switch, turn signal switch, ignition switch, and transmission selector or shifter.
Steering lock: A locking device on the steering column that prevents steering wheel rotation and/or selector lever motion unless unlocked using an ignition key.
Steering wheel: The wheel, located at the top of the steering shaft, which the driver uses to steer the vehicle.
Tachometer: An instrument used to measure engine speed.
Tilt steering wheel: A type of steering wheel that can be tilted to various angles to provide for driver comfort and convenience.
